Parents of Little Ones POLO at St. Joseph's

October 2011 Welcome Back, Parents Of Little Ones (POLO)!

Dear POLO Parents,

Welcome to another year of activities and service projects for our younger set. We are starting off the year with a new service project and a Fall "Meet and Greet" after Mass on October 9th.

Join us for apple cider, apple treats, activity and conversation to welcome old and new friends on Sunday, October 9th after the 9 a.m. Mass at the back lawn of church.

'Breaking Bread' is our latest service project that will offer young families the opportunity to touch the lives of fellow parishioners who have recently lost a loved one.

The Ministry of Compassion offers monthly fellowship and support for those who have lost a loved one. POLO's role would be to provide them with small, individually-wrapped home-baked items to be passed on with our thoughts, prayers and love attached. Even the youngest of our members can help to mix and pour in the kitchen and be a part of creating something for someone else.

How can a small child make a difference?

‘Breaking Bread’ service project started as an idea by a 6yr old parishioner who wanted to share the baked goods she had baked with others. The family brought them to the St. Joseph Church bereavement group. This simple act of kindness was so well received by the group that POLO is now expanding the opportunity to your family.

Come and experience for yourself how one small child can make a difference.

What is involved? Each month a different family would bake and individually wrap approximately 12 muffins/mini-breads/brownies/cookies and attach a card signed or drawn on by the children.

(Not a 'from scratch' baker? That's ok, box mixes work just as well.)

Remember it is the idea and thought behind this that is important. Plus, you are creating special family time, too. Baked goods can be dropped off at the rectory for the Ministry of Compassion on that Sunday morning or a few days ahead of time.

Meetings are on the first Sunday of the month - November 6, December 4, January 8, February 5, March 4 and April 1. If you are interested in participating, please reply to Liz Petroccia at lpetroccia@stjosephmaplewood.org

Little ones can learn about their faith through action.

Love your neighbor as yourself. [Matthew 22:39]

Sincerely,

Mary and Candice

Fall Series for Adults at St. Joseph Church

Something Old...Something New

What's all this talk about the new translation of the Mass?

You've heard it many times: On November 27th, things will sound different at Mass. The Mass will be the same, but the words we use to celebrate it will change.

So why do we say what we say during the liturgy? At times we come to Mass and recite our parts as if we're on autlopilot. But new words give us the opportunity to think more about what we are saying.

Come reacquaint yourself with the Mass. Learn about the new Roman Missal, and why the Mass is arranged the way it is. Identify and get ready for the differences in language that are coming our way.

MAKE THE MASS COME ALIVE

October, 11,25 and November 8,22. 7:30 pm in Bernard Hall.

Like the Growing Faith series we've held in the past, this adult education offering will enhance your spirituality. Join members of our liturgy committee in exploring the deeper meaning behind the words of the Mass. Come and learn how the new translation is even more closely linked to the Bible.

SAVE THE DATE KEN CANEDO CONCERT

September 8, 2011

Dear Parishioner

As you are probably already aware from our parish bulletin, we are hosting an exciting event at our parish that is also a fun way to get ready for the new translation of the Mass later this year.

On Friday, September 30, at 7:30 pm, we will host a concert/workshop with Ken Canedo, composer of several popular contemporary Catholic songs, including Fly like a Bird and One Bread, One Cup. He is also well known for composing with Bob Hurd, The Mass of Glory, which is used in many Catholic parishes throughout the world, including St. Joseph Church.

Ken will present Keep the Fire Burning: The Legacy of the Folk Mass, based on his book of the same name, about music composed for Roman Catholic liturgies immediately after the Second Vatican Council. Faced with the invitation for people to participate more fully in the liturgy, young musicians brought their guitars and enthusiasm to the Mass, with appealing folk songs that empowered the assembly to sing, and planted the seeds for much contemporary Christian music composed in later decades.

With a sing-along of the music of Ray Repp, Paul Quinlan, the Dameans, and others, Boomers and young people will enjoy this fond remembrance of a colorful era in the American Catholic Church. Looking back at what happened just after the new Mass was introduced can inform us as we prepare for the implementation of the revised English translation this November.

Again, the concert/workshop will be Friday, September 30, at 7:30 P.M., at St. Joseph Church. Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $10.00 per person. You can purchase tickets any Sunday this month after Mass or from any Music Minister. Please see the flyer which is posted on this blog previously for more details. I encourage you to attend and enjoy this evening of song and fellowship. It is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Fr. Eustace Edomobi

Eucharistic Adoration

St. Joseph Parish

Eucharistic Adoration

Every Wednesday

12:30- 3:30 PM

with Divine Mercy said at 3pm

What is Eucharistic Adoration?

Understood simply, Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. In a deeper sense, it involves "the contemplation of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us."

During Eucharistic Adoration we "watch and wait" we remain "silent" in His presence and open ourselves to His graces wich flow from the Eucharist...

By worshiping the Eucharistic Jesus, we become what God wants us to be! Like a magnet, the Lord draws us to HImself and gently transforms us.

In it's fullest sense, Eucharistic Adoration is "God and man reaching out for each other at the same time!"

Knights of Columbus to meet
